Bantayan Island. Tropical paradise in the Cebu province
Bantayan Island is a tropical paradise located in the northern part of Cebu province. It is known for its pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and laid-back island vibe. The history of why the island is called Bantayan dates many years back. It was when Moro pirates stormed the island in search of slaves during the reign of the 22nd Governor-General Sebastian Hurtado de Corcuera. At that time 18 watchtowers were built on the shores of the Bantayan Island, earning the term Bantayan sa Hari, or “Watchtowers of the King.”
How to get to Bantayan Island?
One can reach the island by riding a bus from Metro Cebu to Hagnaya port. Then, to get to Bantayan, the only way is to take the boat. The island is administratively divided into three municipalities which are: Bantayan, located at the central part and also the largest municipality; Madridejos, covering the northern part; and lastly, Santa Fe, the center of tourism of the island covering the southeastern part. All of them have a population of almost 170 000 people according to the last, 2020 census. Church of Sts. Peter and Paul
The Parish church of Sts. Peter and Paul is a popular heritage of the island. It is the main church that stands at the principal plaza. What is very interesting about this Parish is the fact that it is the oldest in the Visayas and Mindanao region. It was founded in 1580 by Augustinians. This Church was somewhat a gate for the missionaries coming to the Philippines. After learning a language and culture, they were dispatched to other parts of the country. The first church was built in 1600, however it was destroyed by invaders several times. The current building was completed in 1863. Today the church is admired for its fascinating paintings on the ceiling. During the Holy Week, many people visit the island to witness the unique and vibrant “Semana Santa” (Holy Week) celebrations. It includes processions, street plays, and reenactments of biblical scenes.
